Internationalised Domain Names

Generic

The introduction of Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) is one of the most significant advancements in the history of the Domain Name System. The implementation and management of IDNs however pose some of the most complex technical and policy-related challenges to Top Level Domain (TLD) Regulators and Registry operators.

AusRegistry International has created an IDN-enabled Registry system that overcomes many of these challenges and provides an industry-leading solution that allows high levels of configurability to address linguistic complexities while maintaining relative ease of management and high system performance standards.

AusRegistry International's extensive IDN experience

  • Involvement with the IETF development process for the IDNA2008 protocol

INTERNATIONALISED DOMAIN NAME CAPABILITY

  • Fully compliant with current IDNA2008 draft.
  • Support for all bi-directional and context rules for special characters and linguistic scenarios.
  • Fully customisable from an IDN policy perspective, including:
    • Definition of allowed code points in registrations of a particular language
    • Zone based canonical mapping of code points to block unwanted equivalent names
    • Language based configuration of code point variants
    • mutual exclusion groups - reduces the number of variants, thus reducing management overhead
  • Unicode-enabled whois service, with support for lookups on both A-labels and U-labels
  • Ability to support multiple languages within each zone.
  • IDN-compliant wildcarding reserved lists based on canonical representations.
    • Applied to both A-label and U-labels
  • Appropriate EPP extensions to support registrars automating IDN registrations and domain management functions:
    • Collect language information at time of registration
    • Provide canonical, ASCII, Unicode and variant information to registrars
    • Ability to lookup provisioned variants of a potential name before registration
    • fully Unicode-enable all relevant fields of core and extended EPP functionality
  • Extended all other functionality such as Search, to work with canonical name representations
